Reducing food waste starts with awareness. When waste is made visible and communicated clearly, both diners and kitchen staff can better understand its impact and feel motivated to make more responsible choices.
The new integration between SmartKitchen’s plate waste solution and iDiD’s digital signage system makes this simple: the amount of plate waste can now be displayed directly on info screens where meals are served.
Driving responsible choices together
SmartKitchen and iDiD share a mission to make sustainability visible and actionable.
While iDiD provides a flexible and visually engaging communication channel across different locations, SmartKitchen’s solutions make measuring and monitoring food waste an effortless part of everyday kitchen operations.
What is SmartKitchen’s plate waste application?
SmartKitchen’s Plate Waste solution makes food waste visible right at the dish return point. The app shows diners how much waste they’ve just left, and the total amount accumulated so far. At the same time, the data is stored in SmartKitchen’s online service, where restaurants and foodservice providers can track waste trends, identify areas for improvement, and monitor their sustainability targets. What is iDiD?
iDiD is a Finnish digital signage system that enables organizations to manage and share diverse content across multiple screens. It allows real-time communication with students, customers, or staff and can be used for sustainability messaging, current updates, or promotional campaigns.

Turning data into impact
Thanks to the new integration, food waste data can now be seamlessly included in iDiD’s on-screen content. The displays can, for example, show:
- the average amount of waste per diner (in grams)
- the total waste from the previous day
- relatable comparisons that put the numbers into perspective, such as the equivalent in kilometres driven, minutes spent showering, or donuts thrown away
By making food waste data visible and easy to understand, the integration encourages discussion about sustainability right where food is served.
Easy to activate for all shared customers
The integration is available for all organizations using both SmartKitchen’s waste management solution and iDiD’s digital signage system. This allows food waste data to become a natural and informative part of existing internal communications.
First implementation at Saimaa Vocational College
The first implementation took place at Saimaa Vocational College Sampo, where iDiD screens were already in use as a versatile communication tool. Now, they also display restaurant-specific food waste data as part of daily updates.
“The integration brings plate waste data directly to the place where food is enjoyed. It encourages diners to reflect on their own actions and supports our sustainability goals,” says Marjo Saira, Food Service Manager at Saimaa Vocational College Sampo.
